Thermodynamic analysis of the interactions between human ACE2 and spike RBD of Betacoronaviruses (SARS-CoV-1 and SARS-CoV-2)
2023
There are many scientific reports on the interaction of the SARS-CoV-2 virus S protein (and its RBD) with the human ACE2 receptor protein. However, there are no reliable data on how this interaction differs from the interaction of the receptor binding domain of SARS-CoV-1 with ACE2, in terms of binding strength and changes in reaction enthalpy and entropy. Our studies have revealed these differences and the impact of zinc ions on this interaction. Intriguingly, the binding affinity of both RBDs (of SARS-CoV-1 and of SARS-CoV-2) to the ACE2 receptor protein is almost identical; however, there are some differences in the entropic and enthalpic contributions to these interactions.
Life Cycle Energy and Environmental Assessment of the Thermal Insulation Improvement in Residential Buildings
2021
The refurbishment of the building stock is a key strategy towards the achievement of the climate and energy goals of the European Union. This study aims at evaluating the energy and environmental impacts associated with retrofitting a residential apartment to improve its vertical envelope thermal insulation. Two insulation materials, stone wool and cellulose fibers, are compared. The life cycle assessment methodology is applied assuming 1 m2 of retrofitted vertical envelope as functional unit. Moreover, to estimate the net energy and environmental benefits achievable in the retrofitted scenario compared with the non-retrofitted one, a second analysis is performed in which the system boundar…
Performance evaluation of a bio-based composite building material made of natural resin mixed with hay
2016
Recent years have seen an increasing public interest in issues related to energy saving and environmental pollution reduction in the building sector. As a result, many directives have been issued, the most important being the Directive 2010/31/EU (EPBD Recast) on the energy performance of buildings, which requires that “Member States shall ensure that by 31 December 2020 all new buildings are nearly zero-energy buildings”. This goal can be obtained not only by reducing energy demand for heating and cooling, but also, for example, by improving building envelope performances. In this work, a first analysis of the thermal and structural behaviour of a biocomposite material, constituted by a na…
New oxygenated eudesmanolides from artemisia herba-alba
1990
Abstract The aerial parts of Artemisia herba-alba Asso subsp.valentina Lam. (Asteraceae) yielded the new eudesmanolides 1-11 and the new sesquiterpene-monoterpene adducts 12-13. The absolute configuration of compound 6 was confirmed with the aid of X-ray diffraction analysis. Some aspects of the thermal and photochemical reactivity of 2,4-cyclohexadienones are discussed.

The impact of high-temperature, short-time thermal treatment on texture and weight loss of green asparagus
1997
The kinetics of the degradation of texture and loss of weight of green asparagus heated to between 100 and 130 °C was studied. The texture of the asparagus was evaluated with two types of cells fitted to a universal texturometer: one cell measured resistance to cutting with a wire and the other was a Kramer cell. The two methods enabled distinction between the different thermal treatments, although the Kramer cell gave information about the behaviour of parts of the spear further away from the tip. The thermally induced degradation of the texture and loss of weight followed first-order kinetics. With respect to the texture, the parameters obtained with the wire cell 2.5, 5 and 7.5 cm from t…
The geochemistry of Tl and its isotopes during magmatic and hydrothermal processes: The peralkaline Ilimaussaq complex, southwest Greenland
2014
Abstract We use thallium (Tl) concentrations, K/Rb, K/Tl and Rb/Tl ratios and Tl isotopes in minerals from the alkaline to peralkaline Ilimaussaq complex (South Greenland) to trace magmatic differentiation, crustal assimilation, magmatic degassing, ore precipitation and hydrothermal metasomatism. Closed-system magmatic differentiation is marked by a coherent decrease of K/Tl- and K/Rb-ratios, whereas crustal assimilation results in a strong Tl-enrichment, causing low K/Tl-ratios compared to K/Rb-ratios. Thallium isotopes show only slight changes during orthomagmatic differentiation and the assimilation of crustal material cannot be traced, since the isotopic composition of the average crust…
Effects of ultrasound and high pressure on physicochemical properties and HMF formation in Turkish honey types
2018
Abstract In industrial production, thermal processing of honey at 50 °C commonly induces liquefaction, i.e. it reduces the crystal count and viscosity and delays any subsequent crystallization. Unfortunately, thermal treatment can generate toxic 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), thereby resulting in quality reduction. Considering this, the present work aims at evaluating the influence of (two) processing technologies as alternatives to thermal processing of honey, namely high hydrostatic pressure (HHP; P = 220–330 MPa, T = 50/60 °C, t = 23/106 min), and ultrasound processing (US; at 24 kHz). The quality parameters evaluated for honey included liquefaction time, HMF content, diastase number, co…
Road Thermal Collector for Building Heating in South Europe: Numerical Modeling and Design of an Experimental Set-Up
2022
The combination/integration of renewable energy and storage systems appears to have significant potential, achieving high-energy results with lower costs and emissions. One way to cover the thermal needs of a building is through solar energy and its seasonal storage in the ground. The SMARTEP project aims to create an experimental area that provides for the construction of a road solar thermal collector directly connected to a seasonal low-temperature geothermal storage with vertical boreholes. The storage can be connected to a ground-to-water heat pump for building acclimatization. This system will meet the requirements of visual impact and reduction of the occupied area. Nevertheless, sev…

2018
Important changes in the supply and the demand side of electricity apparatus are now underway, triggered by a combination of drivers dramatically affecting the transmission sector of power systems: greenhouse gas emissions, distributed generation, energy efficiency and the full integration of the European energy market. A variety of accelerating factors - including active consumer, aggregators, energy storage, e-vehicles, etc..- are creating a new era for the many stakeholders, incl. system operators, regional entities, industry and consumer organizations, producers or their trade bodies, Regulators, public decision makers and the society at large. Entraining this background, ENTSO-E and th…
